APOLLO RAPID SET
1. Composition/component parts
Chemical characterization (preparation): reaction resin on a methyl methacryalate basis
Hazardous components
CAS no Substance Content Symbols R phrases
80-62-6 Methyl methacrylate 50 - 100 F.Xi 11-36/37/38-43
n. a. ethoxylated para-Toluidine 2.5 - 10 Xn 22 - 41
2. Possible hazards
Description of hazards: Highly flammable. Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. May cause sensitisation by skin contact.
Particular hazards for persons and the environment: Fumes and air may combine to form explosive mixtures. See also Sections 8, 9 and 11
3. First aid measures
General indications: Remove injured person from danger area. Immediately take off any contaminated or soaked articles of clothing.
After inhalation: Take injured person out into the fresh air. Keep respiratory tract free. If injured person faints, place him in a lateral position: if he stops breathing, attempt artificial respiration. If complaints continue consult a doctor
After skin contact: Immediately wipe skin with paper handkerchief, then clean with ample amounts of soap and water, If irritation or inflammation continues consult a doctor
After eye contact: Immediately rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes, with eyelid held open. If irritation does not cease, consult an ophthalmologist
After swallowing: Drink plenty of water in small quantities, consult a doctor at once.
Indications for doctors: After massive inhalation, have patient inhale Auxilson spray. After swallowing, cause patient to vomit under supervision, carry out gastric irrigation, then give sodium sulphate and activated carbon (1 tbsp for 1/4 litre of water) any further treatment and observation depend on symptoms.
4. Fire fighting measures
Suitable fire-fighting substances: Water spray, powder, carbon dioxide, foam.
Substance not suitable for safety reasons: Water jet.
Particular hazards deriving from the substance preparation itself, from its combustion products or from resulting gases: Combustion/decomposition products result in irritation or inflammation of the respiratory tract. Formation of flammable or explosive fume/air mixtures possible. Burnt residue must be disposed of in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations. Any pollutant fire-fighting substances must not be allowed to run into the sewage system or into waters, or seep into the soil.
Particular fire-fighting precautions: Wear oxygen breathing equipment and chemical protective clothing.
Additional indications: In case of fire, remove product drums/ cans from danger area and then cool them down.
5. Measures in case of inadvertent release.
Precautionary measures regarding persons: Avoid eye and skin contact. Ensure adequate ventilation. Remove any potential sources of ignition. If necessary wear oxygen breathing equipment.
Environmental measures: Do not allow the product to run into sewage system or into waters, or seep into the soil.
Cleaning procedures: Remove any potential sources of ignition. Larger quantities should be cleaned off mechanically (if pumping them off, observe explosion protection rules), smaller quantities should be absorbed by a universal binding agent. (infusorial earth, sawdust). Consign product thus cleaned off and any resulting waste to a local authorized waste disposal unit or to the resin manufacturer.
6. Handling and storage
Safe handling: Only use product in well-ventilated areas. If fumes occur, ensure that fumes are effectively extracted (see section 8) or that breathing equipment with A/P2 combination filter (for short periods) or oxygen breathing equipment is worn. Open product drum carefully; it may be under pressure. Treat empty drums with the same caution as full ones.
Protection against fire: Remove any sources of ignition and heat: do not smoke. Take precautions against electrostatic charges (among other things ensure that clothing and footwear are antistatic and that tools do not give off any sparks). Keep a classification A fire extinguisher at the ready. Protect from heat.
Storage, requirements regarding storage rooms and drums: Store product in closed original drums. Store in dry, well-ventilated rooms at temperatures below 25 degrees. Do not fill drums to more than 80% since atmospheric oxygen is necessary for stabilization. Protect from direct sunlight.
Storage with other substances: Do not store with any oxidizing substances. Do not store with any foodstuffs.
7. Limitation of exposure, personal protection
Component parts to be monitored whenever working with the product:
CAS no Substance Type Value Value
80-62-6 Methyl methacrylate Lower toxic limit 50ppm 210mg/m
Peak limit = 1 =
Pregnancy group Y
Personal protection, breathing equipment: If ventilation or air extraction is inadequate, wear breathing equipment with type A gas filter, colour brown. In case of longer, intensive exposure, use oxygen breathing equipment.
Hand protection: Wear protective gloves made of rubber, with safety sleeve.
Eye protection: Wear tight-fitting protective goggles. Keep bottle with eye-rinse at the ready.
Body protection: Applyskin-protection cream prior to handling the product. Wear antistatic, flame-retardant protective clothing. Keep working clothes in a separate place: change and clean contaminated clothing at once.
Protection and hygienic precautions: Observe the precautions customary when handling chemicals (do not eat while working with the product, do not drink, do not smoke). Adhere to any relevant accident prevention regulations. If ventilation is insufficient, install ventilators or extraction system (ensure protection against explosions): fumes are four times heavier than air, thus extraction must be carried out from below. There is a possibility of hazardous fume concentrations forming in the lower-floor rooms.

Substances to be avoided: Producers of radicals such as peroxides, amines azoic compounds, heavy metal compounds, strong oxidants and reducing agents.
Further indications: Possibility of the formation of explosive fume/air mixtures. |Tendency towards strongly exothermal polymerisation when exposed to heat and in contact with substances to
be avoided. Danger of bursting due to increase pressure in closed drums. The product is supplied in adequately stabilized condition: if, however, there is suspicion of polymerisation owing to unsuitable storage or inappropriate handling, this process can be interrupted by stirring in stabilizers (such as Durocon 403) and by cooling down.
10.Toxicology
There are no data from tests with this preparation. The literature supplies the following indications for the main component, methyl methacrylate: lethal dose LD (oral, rat): 7872 mg/kg: lethal concentration LC (inhale, rat): 3750ppm
Product cause irritation of shin, eyes, mucous membranes and the respiratory tract. The odour threshold value for methyl methacryalate is 0.05 ppm, the lower toxic value is 50 ppm, i.e. the inconvenience caused by the odour is so strong that a concentration sufficient to cause injury through absorption is unlikely to be reached. Sensitisation by skin contact is possible. Pregnancy group Y (no risk to foetus if lower toxic value is adhered to). no poisoning or of lasting injuries is caused by the product if handled appropriately have been known for many years.
